Jim Yao was a model for an academic engineer. His scholarly work and many awards attest to his accomplishments in the progression of structural engineering from a deterministic-based field to to a probabilistic-based field.
Jim not only impressed his colleagues and fellow researchers with his excellent science, but he also entertained their families and anyone who happened to be around by folding his famous paper birds.
To see an individual with such high scientific standing take the time to fold a bird for a person he hardly knew was heartwarming.
His family should be proud of his life and legacy.
