Dear Tim,
I was sad to hear the your father passed away but it is good that members of his family were with him at the end. Jim was a special kind of person who was very compassionate and always was concerned with the needs of others. I am sure his many graduate students would testify to the fatherly attention he paid to them. He will be remembered for his many contributions to the professional community.
I have fond memories of your father such as the time a small group of us were together and decided to go to a Chinese restaurant for a meal. When we arrived at the location Jim said wait here while I go in and negotiate. This he did and we all had one of the best Chinese meals we ever had.
It is sad that Jim had such a difficult time at the end of his life but we will all remember the good times we had with him. So I send my and my wife's sad regards.
