How to make bullet lists

You can make bullet lists by prepending a line with an asterisk (has to be at the left margin):

*bullet list item

makes:

 • bullet list item

And you can bold items by bolding putting three single quotes in a row before and after what you want to bold.

How to start a new page

There are two ways to begin new pages. 1. Edit the page you want to link from and write a word or phrase in double square brackets: This is an example of a link

This will produce: This is an example of a link

When you click on it the first time, you'll be taken to a brand new page that you can edit.

2. The other way to do it is to type the phrase (in double square brackets) in the search box. Note that this method doesn't auto-link the new page, so you then need to insert your double-square brackets link onto some page so that the newly created page isn't an orphan.

Headings and the table of contents

By default, every page with headings generates a table of contents. If you don't want this behavior, you need to include at the bottom of the page (note: two underscores before and two after the TOC): __NOTOC__

To create a heading, surround what you want to be a heading with a matching number of equal signs.

Example: == This is a second level heading ==

Second level headings become h2 tags (for those of you with HTML knowledge)

How to link in something from outside

External links are simply the URL in single square brackets.

E.g., this is squarearts is created with this is squarearts

See how any space after the URL becomes the delimiter between the URL and your descriptive text.

How to sign pages or sections

Note that you can sign things by putting four tilde's in a row: ~~~~

How to upload and link files

See http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Images_and_other_uploaded_files for very detailed help on this. In brief:

 • Upload the file (be sure to check "Ignore warnings")
 • When the file is uploaded, you will be on the Image:filename page with details about the uploaded file (and options to update it to a newer version). Just swipe and copy the Image:filename heading
 • Go back to your original page that you wanted to post the link on and edit it. Put on the page Image:filename or Media:filename (the former will link to the file details page, from which the user can download it; the latter will allow the user to directly download the file)

Additional instructions on uploading and linking files

To do uploads,

 • Upload file
 • You'll be at your uploaded file's page. What you can do is select and copy the page's title
 • Go to the page where you want to create the link. Edit it. Type in:

The resulting link will take folks to your "Image" page from where they can download the file or upload a new version. Or you can change Image to Media:

And people clicking on this link will automatically download the file.

 • IF you need to find your Image page and it is soon after you uploaded the file, use the Special:Recentchanges link to see recently uploaded files.
 • IF you need to find your Image page and it has been a long while, use the Special:Specialpages link to go to the Special:Unusedimages page that lists uploaded files that aren't linked to.
